How to report a daycare injury to the Georgia Department of Earning Learning (Bright from the Start)

Every state has a licensing authority that will record and investigate incidents of injury, abuse, and neglect suffered by a child while in the care of a childcare facility. The Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL), also known as “Bright from the Start,” is that authority in Georgia.
Bright from the Start is responsible for meeting the child care and early education needs of Georgia’s children and their families by licensing child care centers and home-based child care.
So your child was injured in a daycare. Who’s going to tell whom? In an ideal world, the daycare is responsible for informing Bright from the Start of the incident right away. But since we don’t live in a perfect world, you can bet that rarely happens, if not at all. If you don’t want to go through confronting the daycare, you may get in touch with Bright from the Start’s Child Care Services Division. Many parents don’t know that they can report incidents themselves.

Go to decal.ga.gov, choose ”Contact Us,” follow “Child Care Services,” look for “Complaint,” and click it.

There are two options to file your complaint: 1) You can file a complaint by calling the Child Care Services (CCS) hotlines at 404.657. 5562 or 404.656. 5957; or 2) send an e-mail to ccscomplaints@decal.ga.gov

The investigators will be very accommodating but make their jobs easier; please be prepared with names, addresses, contact details, detailed statements, and narrations. It would also help the investigators and your case a lot if you could provide pertinent information about the incident, like police and medical reports.

If you believe that your child may have been the victim of a felony while in the care of a daycare facility, make sure to call your local police department to get the proper investigative authorities involved as soon as possible. The police department will assist the state licensing entity and ensure that any criminal charges are brought against the responsible person.
