Hi, I’m LaShonda Council Rogers, your Georgia personal injury lawyer. During the holidays, many of us get caught up in celebrations and decorating, but it’s also a time when injuries can happen more often than you might expect. In this video, I want to share five common holiday injuries and simple tips to help you stay safe this season.
1. Falls While Decorating
According to the CDC, nearly 6,000 people fall while decorating each year. Sometimes these falls warrant the need for a good Atlanta, GA slip and fall lawyer. Whether you’re hanging lights or putting up ornaments, always make sure you’re standing on a stable surface. Avoid climbing on furniture like couches or chairs. Instead, use a stepladder or sturdy stool to prevent falls.
2. Electric Shock
Each year, about 5,000 people suffer electric shocks during the holiday season from indoor or outdoor decorations. Electric shock injuries can be serious and cause cardiac arrest, burns, and nerve damage. Be extra cautious when handling decorations that use electricity — check for damaged wires and avoid overloading outlets.
3. Back Injuries
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reports over 50,000 luggage-related injuries during the holidays. When packing or lifting luggage, don’t overpack your bags, and use proper lifting techniques to avoid strains and back injuries.
4. Burns From Christmas Trees
A dry Christmas tree can catch fire and engulf a room in less than 30 seconds. To reduce your risk:
- Buy a fresh tree with intact needles
- Get a fresh cut on the trunk
- Water it daily — a well-watered tree is almost impossible to ignite.
5. Car Accidents
Unfortunately, holiday car accidents increase as people celebrate and often consume alcohol. If you plan to drink, please don’t drive. Stay safe by using a designated driver or alternative transportation.
