Daycare Safety
There is no other love and adoration comparable to that of a parent and their child. When you leave your child at a daycare facility, you are trusting that they will be comfortable, nurtured and most importantly, safe. However, sometimes a parent’s worst nightmare becomes reality as they receive a call stating their child has been injured. This is unfortunately a reality for many families as injuries that occur at daycare facilities range from minor accidents to serious injuries. To make matters worse, oftentimes these injuries are the result of negligence at the facility and the caregivers failing to act appropriately and failing to ensure that their facility is completely safe for children.
Children are rambunctious, carefree, and very curious individuals at young ages. Thus, even small breaches in care can be detrimental to a child. One frequently cited case of daycare negligence is a three-year old child who died after swallowing a pushpin in 2011. There have been many other cases of children choking on pushpins as well despite the fact that they have been known to cause serious dangers to young children. With this being said, it is increasingly important that day care providers not only act with caution at all times to keep children safe, but are attentive to children at all times. Caregivers not properly supervising children is a significant cause of injuries at daycare facilities; however, caregivers cannot properly provide care to all children if they are understaffed. When researching childcare facilities, be sure to make note of the number of staff members who will be assigned to tend to your child. Simply put, if there are not enough adults attentively watching the children, they are far more likely to unintentionally injure themselves.
Moreover, an additional cause of serious injury for children is faulty equipment. Childcare facilities should frequently check that their playground equipment and toys are in proper functioning order at all times. Playground equipment can become fragile overtime as wind, rain, ice, and the sun can cause the plastic to fissure and chip. Additionally, overtime the wooden guardrails will disintegrate revealing protruding nails. As playground equipment ages it should be repaired or replaced. Failing to properly maintain these entities often result in serious injury as one fall off of a jungle gym could mean several broken bones for a child.
